← Lenormand cards

Lenormand is a language of pictures made of 36 cards. Each card is a word – a house, a path, a letter – and only together with its neighbors does it become a sentence. Here is a path in six steps, from the single card to the Grand Tableau.

What makes Lenormand different
36 cards from everyday life

Where tarot tells of inner paths with 78 cards, Lenormand shows 36 simple pictures: house, tree, ship, key. They speak clearly and concretely – about what is happening in your life right now.

The cards live from their neighbors

A single Lenormand card is like a word without a sentence. Its meaning only unfolds next to other cards. That is why Lenormand is best learned in pairs and rows.

The essentials first
Cards are read in pairs

The first card names the topic, the second gives it its color. The Heart + The Ring: a love that wants to show commitment. The Ring + The Heart: a bond or a contract with a lot of heart in it.

Same cards, different sentence – the order guides your eye.

Counting neighbors

What lies close together has a lot to do with each other. The farther apart two cards lie, the more quietly they speak to each other. So you first read a card’s direct neighbors and then the wider circle.

The Man and The Woman as reference points

The Man (28) and The Woman (29) stand for you or for a person in your life. What lies close to them is close to you right now. The direction of their gaze counts, too: the cards your person card faces show where your attention is directed.

Pace and yes/no

Some cards carry a pace: The Rider or The Scythe speak of movement, The Tree or The Mountain of patience. Others feel like a yes or a hesitation. Take that as a hint about the mood – and ask yourself what you can contribute to things going well.

A mirror

The cards show what is at work in you and around you. You carry the answer within yourself – the cards help you see it. Every interpretation is the start of a journey.

The good question

Open questions open the cards: «What helps me …?», «What should I pay attention to?», «How can I …?» That way they show you paths instead of a verdict.

Your path in six steps

Lenormand has no fixed number of spreads. These are the best-known ones – and they build on each other nicely. You will find them all in detail under Lenormand spreads.

One card

1 card

Goal: get to know the 36 pictures – as a daily impulse or for a topic.

In the morning, draw a card as an impulse for your day, or think of a topic and let one card speak to it. Take your time with the picture: a house, a ship, a letter? Lenormand images come from everyday life, which is why you often meet them quite literally. In the evening, ask yourself: Where did this picture show up in my day?

Tip: Give each card a single keyword that fits you. After a few weeks you will know all 36 by name.

Three cards

3 cards

Goal: answer a short question or tell how something unfolds.

Three cards in a row are the smallest story. You can read them as a sequence – where something comes from, where it stands now, where it is heading – or as past, present and future. First read the pairs left–middle and middle–right: the first card names the topic, the second colors it. Then the whole arc.

Tip: Tell the row in a single sentence. If you get stuck, look at the middle card once more.

Five cards

5 cards

Goal: shed more light on a question.

With five cards your question gains depth. The middle card is the heart of the row, the two on the left show what flows into it, the two on the right where it leads. So you see not only the topic, but also its roots and its next steps.

Tip: Read from the center outward – first the direct neighbors, then the outer cards.

Seven cards

7 cards

Goal: look at connections and how things develop.

Seven cards in a row tell a longer path. The fourth card in the middle is the turning point: what lies before it has shaped the situation, what comes after it shows how it can develop. Watch for cards that mirror each other – the first and the seventh, the second and the sixth.

Tip: Find the card that touches you most and read the row from there.

The small tableau

9 cards

Goal: see a topic with several influences.

Nine cards in a square, three by three. At the reading table this spread is called «the sphere»: the card in the center is the core of your question, the eight cards in the ring act on it. Read each ring card as a pair with the center, then the rows and columns that run through the core.

Tip: Start with the card that speaks to you first. That is often the door into the whole spread.

The Grand Tableau

36 cards

Goal: look at different areas of life and how they connect.

The Grand Tableau: all 36 cards lie face up – either in four rows of eight with four cards below, or in four rows of nine. Each card sits in a house and next to neighbors. Start with your person card and read what lies close to it and where it is looking. The Grand Tableau is a map of your life right now – you can come back to it again and again.

Take your time with the Grand Tableau: read it step by step, row by row, and come back to it more than once.
