Lenormand has no fixed number of spreads. Here you will find the six best-known ones – from the single card to the Grand Tableau with all 36 cards. Every spread is read in pairs and neighborhoods.

«What is with me today? What shows up about my topic?»

What for: A daily impulse in the morning or a quick look at a single topic.

  1. 1Your impulse: the picture that accompanies you today or on your topic.

First read the card quite literally: Lenormand images come from everyday life and often show up exactly like that – a letter, a path, a house. Then ask yourself what the picture can mean figuratively. In the evening, look back: Where did you meet it?

«How is my situation developing?»

What for: A short question, a development – or past, present and future.

  1. 1Where it comes from – or: what lies behind you.
  2. 2The core – where you stand now.
  3. 3Where it is heading – the next stretch.

Read the row as two pairs: 1 with 2, then 2 with 3. The first card of a pair names the topic, the second gives it its color. Finally, tell all three as one sentence – the middle card holds it together.

«What lies within my question – and where can it lead?»

What for: Shed more light on a question: its roots, its core and its path.

  1. 3The heart of the question.
  2. 1·2What flows into it – the backstory and what is resonating right now.
  3. 4·5Where it leads – the next step and the further direction.

Start in the middle with card 3, then read its direct neighbors 2 and 4 as pairs with it. The outer cards 1 and 5 speak more quietly; they give the wider frame. Compare 1 and 5: How has the picture changed from beginning to end?

«What connections are at work in my situation, and how is it developing?»

What for: Look at connections and a longer development.

  1. 1–3What has shaped the situation.
  2. 4The turning point in the middle – this is what matters now.
  3. 5–7How it can develop further.

First read the middle, card 4, then the row from left to right in pairs. After that, look at the mirror pairs: 1 and 7, 2 and 6, 3 and 5. They show what transforms from the past into what is coming, and where a theme returns.

The small tableau

«What is acting on my topic?»

What for: A topic with several influences – from within and from outside.

  1. 5The core in the middle: your topic.
  2. 1·2·3The top row: what you are aware of, what you think and strive for.
  3. 7·8·9The bottom row: what carries you or works unnoticed.
  4. 4·6On the left, what is leaving – on the right, what is coming.

At the reading table this spread is called «the sphere»: the eight ring cards act on the core. Read each ring card as a pair with the center. Then follow the lines that run through the core – the horizontal (4-5-6), the vertical (2-5-8) and the two diagonals (1-5-9, 3-5-7). Finally the four corners: they sum up the spread.

The Grand Tableau

«What does my life look like as a whole right now?»

What for: Different areas of life and how they connect – a map of your life right now.

  1. 4×8+4Four rows of eight cards and four cards below – the last four are often seen as an outlook.
  2. 4×9Or four rows of nine cards.
  3. 1–36Each position is a house: position 1 is the house of The Rider, position 24 the house of The Heart, position 36 the house of The Cross.
  4. 28·29Your person card, The Man or The Woman: the center you read from.

First find your person card. What lies close to it is close to you right now; what lies far away has a quieter effect. See where it is looking – that is where your attention is directed. Then read the houses: each card colors the theme of the house it lies in. The diagonals through your person card show lines that run through your life. The Grand Tableau takes time – you can come back to it again and again and discover new connections.
