Eight of Cups
The Path into Moonlight
The energy of the card
A figure in a red cloak leaves eight cups behind and climbs upstream into a dark gorge, the moon above. The card shows a departure with a heavy heart: the familiar has to go, and the new path lies in uncertainty. Farewell, wistfulness and fear of what is coming travel along – and yet it is your own decision that carries you.
Your path with this card
In the moonlight the path reveals itself only bit by bit, and that is exactly how you may walk it. With every step away from the old, the load grows a little lighter, and the meaning of setting out becomes clearer. The card invites you to trust your decision, even while your heart still looks back.
- What are you leaving behind right now, even though it is familiar?
- What calls you onto the path, even though it still lies in the dark?
In the shadow
Here the card itself lies in shadow: loneliness, worry about the future, a hard road. It invites you to feel the wistfulness and keep walking anyway.
The image and its meaning
The wanderer is on his way and painfully leaves 8 cups behind.
Ahead of him lies a dark mountain that he still has to cross. He does not know exactly what awaits him – at this moment there is a solar eclipse – the moon slides in front of the sun and brings darkness and uncertainty. Unexpected news and events often slip into our life and cloud our otherwise clear view of the goal.
At the same time, the Eight of Cups tells us that this state can only be temporary – at some point the moon moves on and the light of the sun lights our way as usual. Sometimes, despite uncertainty, we have to take risks and leave some security and abundance behind in order to reach our goal. The wanderer has already overcome smaller obstacles, like the river; a stretch of the road still lies ahead.
The Eight of Cups wants to give us courage to continue on our path despite the hardships and the present uncertainty.
