The image and its meaning
The Ten of Pentacles contains several hidden messages and secrets for those initiated into esoteric symbols.
Beneath an archway a man and a woman are talking; a child strokes one of the two dogs and looks shyly at an old man. At first the old man is barely noticeable – in a powerful robe he looks at the dogs and the child; his role as a magician can be recognized by the symbols on his robe (crescent moon, double cross, Dionysian grapes ...). The clear blue sky symbolizes the clarity and harmony of the whole. His robe gives him an air of mystery and spiritual authority.
The town walls radiate security and order. The scales and the coat of arms on the wall stand for justice and authority. Caringly he lays his hand on the head of one of the dogs.
The arrangement of the coins holds a special feature – the 10 coins are arranged in the same pattern as the Sephiroth of the Kabbalah, the Hebrew secret teaching. The Order of the Golden Dawn, which developed the R.W. Tarot, uses the Kabbalah as a tool of initiation into the mysteries. The Ten of Pentacles asks us to take in the many small details of life.
