Five of Cups

The Time of Tears

The energy of the card

A figure in a black cloak stands bowed by the river, three spilled cups before it. What was joy has broken. The card shows grief, loss and disappointment – a real pain that needs time. Behind the figure two cups still stand, and a bridge leads across to the castle.

Your path with this card

Grief goes its own way, day by day. With every day you allow the sorrow, the load grows a little lighter, and at some point you turn toward the cups still standing. The card invites you to give yourself time and to step onto the bridge at the right moment.

  • Which loss wants to be mourned right now?
  • Which two cups are still standing behind you?

In the shadow

Here the card itself lies in shadow: sorrow, failure, worry. It invites you to feel the pain rather than push it away – and then to turn around.

The image and its meaning

A figure turned away from us in the black robe of mourning.

Silent, upright and lost in thought, she stares into nothingness. It is still time to work through sad feelings, to digest setbacks and to face the emptiness that has opened up. During this time we do not notice the rich river right at our feet, the bridge and the world beyond it.

Sadly, we see only 3 spilled cups, whose riches we perceive as an irretrievable loss. We place ourselves behind a «line of retreat» of our own making. Wounds of the soul simply need their time to heal – and we should feel free to take that time.

When the time of mourning is over, we will lift our heads again and open up to the abundance around us. Then we turn around and see the remaining cups that are still full and just waiting to be used. We will recognize the world and its possibilities again and take the first step toward the bridge.
