Four of Pentacles
The Hand That Holds On
The energy of the card
In front of a city sits a man clutching four coins – under his feet, on his head, against his chest. The card shows a clinging to security: worry, tightness and circling around what you might lose. Rarely is it wise caution; more often it is fear that holds on.
Your path with this card
Movement comes as soon as you open one hand a little. Every small letting go shows you that you are held anyway. The card invites you to look at your fear and practice trust step by step.
- What are you holding on to right now because you are afraid of losing it?
- What would be set free if you opened one hand?
In the shadow
Here the card itself lies in shadow: greed, mistrust, standstill born of fear. It invites you to find security within yourself rather than in what you hoard.
The image and its meaning
A small king sits in front of his small town guarding 4 coins.
He holds one coin over his heart – a sign of inner values to be preserved, but at the same time this gesture also closes his heart. Another coin sits atop his crown – his thoughts revolve mainly around material things. Two coins lie on the ground as a base for his feet.
The small king relies on what is tangible and acquired, on clear values. The Four of Pentacles asks us to protect our intentions, actions and beliefs – but also to rethink them if need be. The absence of sacred buildings in the town in the background also suggests an analytical and matter-of-fact development.
The Four of Pentacles spurs us on to keep defending and protecting our inner values in the current phase of life. At the same time, it warns us not to focus too much on appearances and material possessions.
