The Fool Tarot Card: Meaning and Symbols

Ask Cai

The Fool

The Leap into the Open

The energy of the card

A beginning with light luggage. The Fool trusts the moment, follows his curiosity and lets life surprise him. He knows very little yet – and that is exactly where his freedom lies.

Your path with this card

Where this leap leads only reveals itself as you go. Each step opens the next; the path takes shape beneath your feet. The Fool invites you to set out and meet the unknown with open hands.

  • What would you begin today if you owed no one an explanation?
  • What can you leave behind so your luggage grows light?

In the shadow

Lightness turns into recklessness: the eyes are on the sky while the foot already hangs over the edge. The Fool reminds you to see the edge – and to jump anyway when it calls you.

The image and its meaning

The tarot card The Fool stands for the curious child in us that knows no limits and tries everything.

Sometimes we need to be optimistic and move beyond our own limits. At court, the court jester was an important figure outside social norms – he alone enjoyed a fool’s license. The jester had to be intelligent in order to slip into the role of a seemingly natural fool.

Only he could bring fitting criticism before the king without risking losing his head for it. The Fool lives in the present and demands the freedom of the mind that a fool enjoys. Sometimes we need this naivety and curiosity to free ourselves from crushing problems and to gain a different, better view of our situation in life.
